Software

Software for your PC or workstation

OIT and University Procurement have arrangements to help you get a variety of software at reduced cost. In a few cases the software is free, because the University has a site license. However normally there is some cost. Much of the OIT site license operation is self-funding, which means that we have to recover costs for the software and the staff person who administers it.

Information on site licensed software is available in several different areas:

  • The Microcomputer Support Services Group manages site licenses and software distribution. Their software is primarily for the PC and Macintosh, although in some cases (currently Arcview, Maple, SAS, SPSS, and Oracle) Unix versions are also available. This software is licensed for Rutgers-owned machines, although some is also available for home computers.
  • The Unix Support Group manages software for Unix, primarily Solaris, with some services also for SGI and Linux. This software is listed on the System administrator's web page. While this is primarily Unix software, Sun's Java development system, the NAG numerical libraries, and possibly StarOffice are also available for Windows.

Consulting

OIT provides a variety of consulting and support facilities, most of which applies to software. More information on these services is available in the following sections:

As part of the departmental assistance, it is possible to contract with OIT for installation and support of software.

Software Available in OIT Facilities

OIT maintains a large set of software (many dozens of applications) on the Mac and Windows systems in its public labs. These are most commonly used by students to complete their course assignments. However the public labs may also be used by faculty and staff. The software includes wordprocessing, spreadsheet & charting, graphics, database, desktop publishing, math and statistical packages.

PC and Macintosh Software

While the collections are similar on all campuses, there are slight differences, depending upon requirements of courses on those campuses. So for a complete list, you should see your campus' web page:

Unix Software

Faculty, staff and students also have access to software running on central Unix timesharing systems. For general information on these systems, including the software available, see the introduction to OIT Unix-based services.

More specific lists of available software are available for some systems:

Requesting New Software for OIT Facilities

If you need software that is not currently available, you should normally contact the Help Desk for your particular system, preferably by email. Your request should indicate

  • The specific software that you need. Please specify as much information as you know, such as the vendor, and any specific requirements you have about versions.
  • Which system you need the software for.
  • What it is going to be used for.
  • The approximate number of people who will be using it.
  • When it is required.
  • Whether it is needed permanently, or the date when it will no longer be needed.
